October 16, 2009—Better Work, a partnership program between IFC and the International Labour Organization, recently organized the first international buyers forum in Haiti. The new program aims to create jobs, promote sustainable development, and encourage responsible labor practices in the country's growing garment industry.
In May 2009, IFC and ILO signed a new cooperation agreement to consolidate efforts to improve labor standards and continue promoting the business case for better working conditions globally, which could help improve the lives of about 1.2 million workers in developing countries. Established in 2009, Better Work Haiti is a rollout of Better Work's pioneering global program to improve labor standards along the world's global supply chains. It is supported by the United States Department of Labor. The Better Work global program is supported by Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland. The country programs are supported by Australia, Canada, the European Union, Finland, Ireland, Japan, Jordan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States.
